STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS
The scholarship program was
implemented to
help primary and
secondary students from
families
with meager incomes that
are
associated with IEPC missions and
congregations. To qualify, the
students have
to maintain good
academic standing.
The objective of the program is to give incentives that will encourage students in school. Periodic meetings are held with all participants and they are expected to be active in their local mission or congregation.
The economic stimulus is more symbolic. The program is above all one of moral and spiritual support. The students who don't pass their classes automatically lose their scholarship. The students’ academic progress is followed very closely; they are required to present their grades to the directors of the scholarship program.
In 1999, 56 students received scholarships: 35 in primary school and 21 secondary students. 47 of those students passed their classes and advanced to the next grade level. Unfortunately, 9 did not.
All students receiving scholarships are from marginal urban neighborhoods around San Jose. One of the major problems students face is an unstable family situation.
